Our English Hub is one of 34 schools across England appointed by the DfE to support schools in promoting a love of reading, and providing excellent teaching in phonics and early language.

About Us

Aims

Our hub focuses on three crucial priority areas:

Quality phonics provision

Encouraging best practice in systematic synthetic phonics teaching within school. This includes:

  • Encouraging fidelity to a single systematic synthetic phonics programme
  • Supporting effective use of decodable books in the early stages of learning to read to establish phonic decoding
  • Supporting effective practice in formative assessment in relation to phonics/early reading
Language and oracy

Providing evidence-based approaches to early language development and supporting schools to close the word gap, developing an oracy approach across school.

Promoting a love of reading

Supporting schools to build a robust pedagogy that encourages children to read for pleasure, this includes:

  • Developing social reading environments
  • Reading to children for enjoyment
  • Effective independent reading
  • Supporting informal book talk and reading communities
