Aims
Our hub focuses on three crucial priority areas:
Quality phonics provision
Ensuring best practice in systematic synthetic phonics teaching within school. This includes:
- Encouraging fidelity to a single systematic synthetic phonics programme
- Supporting effective use of decodable books in the early stages of learning to read to establish phonic decoding
- Supporting effective practice in formative assessment in relation to phonics/early reading
Language and oracy
Providing evidence-based approaches to early language development and supporting schools to close the word gap, developing an oracy approach across school.
Promoting a love of reading
Supporting schools to build a robust pedagogy that encourages children to read for pleasure, this includes:
- Developing social reading environments
- Reading to children for enjoyment
- Effective independent reading
- Supporting informal book talk and reading communities
