We warmly welcome you to join us at our Open Events to explore effective early language development; systematic synthetic phonics provision; and the promotion of a love of reading.In the absence of face-to-face Open Events.  We now have dates for our upcoming events in early 2022, these will include:

  • Information focusing on early language and vocabulary development; effective synthetic phonics provision; and creating a rich reading culture across school;
  • Opportunities to view videos of the delivery of phonics and vocabulary support at Westgarth;
  • An opportunity to discuss effective practice in the teaching of phonics and early reading;
  • Support to begin auditing and evaluating your own provision in order to develop an action plan;
  • Details of how to apply for Hub funding to develop your school’s effective teaching of phonics and early reading (up to £3,000 match funded of £6,000 unmatched, subject to specific criteria).

These events are open to all schools in the Redcar & Cleveland, Middlesbrough, Stockton, Hartlepool and Sunderland local authorities.

Information Meeting – Medium Level Support online Event

This is an opportunity for Headteachers and Reading Leads to find out about and discuss the Partnership agreement with Westgarth English Hub. We will explore the Partnership Agreement, sharing our commitment to Partner Schools and what this looks like for the school. We will also explain what additional funding you could access and what backfill funding you can expect for each Literacy Specialist Support day.
This meeting requires a Headteacher and/or a member of the Senior Leadership Team within school to attend.

Launchpad for Literacy – Session 2

Facilitating Language Skills – MLS online Event

Within this session we will look at using the Launchpad for Literacy Skills Framework in order to establish starting points with language development, to identify gaps and set next steps. How this fits in with, and can sit alongside, the new Development Matters will be also be discussed.
This session is aimed at EYFS Leads and Teachers, although Phonic & English Leads and SENDCos may also wish to attend. KS1 Practitioners working with children who have a high level of Literacy and/or Speech, Language & Communication need may also wish to attend.

Launchpad for Literacy – Session 3

Troubleshooting Issues with Progression – MLS online Event

Within this session we will talk about many of the Skill Strands that were discussed within Session One. However, this time, these skills will be considered in relation to older children where ongoing gaps have become barriers to learning and progression.
This session is aimed at KS1 Teachers, although Phonic and English Leads and SENDCos may also wish to attend. Reception Teachers and EYFS Leads should also attend, as they start the process of noticing gaps and begin to tackle issues with progression.
